Chapter 19

Mariax

Twisting my wrist to the right, I tighten the screw of the new soft hinges I’m installing on every cabinet. Finding my cabinets open constantly, caused by who knows what, is driving me insane. Hopefully, these self-close hinges will help.

Moving on to the next, I’m interrupted by a knock on my door.

I growl in frustration, muttering curses under my breath. Why am I constantly interrupted, especially on my time off? Can’t get a goddamn minute to myself, and it’s infuriating. I stomp to my front door and rip it open without checking who’s behind it first.

To my surprise, Hunter stands there looking slightly sheepish, but there is still a roguish smirk on his bearded face. His wild hair is pulled back into a loose bun at the nape of his neck. Curly strands escape its confines and stick out randomly. One of his tattooed forearms rests against the doorframe. The other reaches up to grip the top of the frame, making the tendons and muscles in his arms and shoulders bulge in a mouthwatering way.

I continue my open perusal along the planes of his body. A dark blue plaid flannel stretches across his shoulders, rolled up to about halfway up his biceps in the style that those human Marines do. It is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. I want to run my tongue between the roll of the shirt and his skin.

He clears his throat in an attempt to get my attention. I glare at him, my eyebrows pinching together, as I plant my hands firmly on my hips.

He laughs deeply and makes that sound that only a Scotsman could make. The sound could mean anything from an acknowledgment to indignation, but this one is potent with something I can’t quite name. There is definitely humor, but it’s laced with something unusual.

“Are ye going to keep staring at me, wee cheetie, or are ye going to invite me in?”

“You invited yourself here. I did not command your presence. Why should I let you in? You’re supposed to be in the Poconos, anyway. Why are you here?”

He looks over his shoulder, turning his head both ways to see if the hallway is clear. I know he’s concerned about leaving his back exposed. His wolf instincts are riding him hard, but it’s not fear, just cautiousness. However, I stand my ground.

“Aye, I came home early from my cabin. The full moon passed, and I wanted to stay a couple of days further, but I couldn’t stand being away from ye a moment longer.”

Little flutters of anticipation take flight in my stomach. “Well, that’s sweet, but—”

He cuts me off by putting his large, warm palm on my chest above my breasts, then firmly, but gently, he pushes me back. I allow it even though I have the power to stay like a brick wall all day if I want to.

I step backward, moving with the pressure of his palm until he clears the entryway. His leg snakes out, grabbing the side of the door and kicking it closed.
